Silberregion Karwendel

From the craggy summits of the Karwendel Alps via the Lower Inntal Valley between Kolsass and Jenbach as far as the lush foothills of the Tux Alps, the Karwendel Silver Region is home to a diverse landscape and many cultural attractions.

The Karwendel Silver Region stretches from the craggy limestone summits of the Karwendel Alpine Park via the wide Lower Inntal Valley between Kolsass and Jenbach as far as the tree-covered foothills of the Tux Alps. It is this diversity of landscapes which makes the region so special and draws many visitors in summer, especially hikers and mountain bikers. The largest town is Schwaz, a hub of silver mining in the 15th and 16th centuries and today the centre of the Karwendel Silver Region. At the heart of the town lies its medieval old town with a Franciscan monastery, Tirol’s largest gothic hall church, several art galleries and a mining museum. The region includes twelve surrounding towns and villages, including Jenbach with its historic rack-and-pinion Achenseebahn railway, the quiet village of Hinterriss close to the border with Bavaria and Weerberg in the foothills of the Tux Alps.

Hike to the Engalm, ski tour to the Großer Gilfert

Ideal for hiking and mountain biking, the barely populated Karwendel Nature Park is the polar opposite to the busy and vibrant Inntal Valley. One popular hike is to the Engalm in the Risstal Valley. This quiet hamlet surrounded by high mountains has been shaped over the centuries by farming. As you move to the south of the Inntal Valley, the landscape changes into lush rolling foothills covered with thick pinewood forests. Here in the foothills of the Tux Alps visitors in winter will find three small ski resorts and a whole host of off-piste ski touring routes leading up onto nearby mountains such as the Großer Gilfert near Weerberg. The area is also a haven for tobogganing enthusiasts, with the longest of the 17 toboggan runs located in Vomp (3km) and floodlit until midnight.

Hiking in Karwendel Silver Region

To the west a nature park, to the south-east the foothills of the Tux Alps - the Karwendel Silver Region offers a diverse landscape with 600-year-old trees and spectacular views of 3,000m peaks.

The Karwendel Silver Region offers fine rewards for walkers and hikers willing to work up a sweat. For example, the two-day hike through the Karwendel Mountain comprises 24 kilometres of hiking with 1,400 vertical metres of ascent. The route takes in the Karwendel Nature Park with its mixed forests and stone pine bushes all the way to the Großer Ahornboden, a plateau home to centuries-old sycamore trees. Autumn is the best time of year to explore this area, with the leaves on the 600-year-old trees shimmering in a thousand shades of red, yellow, orange, brown and gold. Several stages of the Eagle Walk also traverse the region. Families with children in search of easier walks in the nature park will enjoy the ramble to the Eng-Alm hut or the Ganalm hut. In the Tux Alps we recommend a trip to the Kellerjochhütte with its fantastic views at 2,237 metres above sea level taking in some of Austria's highest peaks such as the Großglockner and the Großvenediger. The hut can also be reached via the Inn Valley High Trail.

Karwendel Silver Region for Families

"Escape everyday life and head out into nature!" That is the motto of the Karwendel Silver Region when it comes to family holidays. The region makes it easy to turn these bold words into reality thanks to its huge range of outdoor adventures and activities just waiting to be discovered.

A family hike to the Karwendel Nature Park is an absolute muss for all families who spend their holiday in the Karwendel Silver Region. Highlights include the Großer Ahornboden with its centuries-old sycamore trees and the Eng-Alm mountain hut with its play area, tractor race track and mini farmyard. The many activities as part of the weekly programme, most of which are available free of charge, also give visitors the chance to explore the local flora and fauna. Those in search of a little local history can visit Freundsberg Castle and Tratzberg Castle, both of which date back many centuries. And, last but not least, don't forget to visit the silver mine in Schwaz, which was once the largest mine of its kind in Europe and today gives the Karwendel Silver Region its name.
